The plate is factory-blackened, i.e. burned in fat, which provides the cast iron with impregnation and protects food from sticking.

Before first use, the plate should be washed with a sponge or brush in hot water without using detergents.

In as part of maintenance, it is advisable to rub the plate with edible fat (animal fat or oil) from time to time to prevent the walls of the pot from being completely degreased.

The lack of a preservative coating encourages food to stick, degreasing may cause discoloration or rust.
